Sufiah Yusof, Math prodigy now a £130 hooker claim

Labels: , , , , , , , , , ,

here's your full coverage of the story

[The Star] PETALING JAYA: Sufiah Yusof, the child Maths genius who won a place at Oxford University when she was just 13, has been found to be working as a prostitute, according to a report in London’s News of the World.Sufiah, now 23, whose father Farooq is a Pakistani and mother Halimathon is from Johor, was reported to have entertained an undercover reporter in her flat in Manchester.Claiming that she had posted her services for £130 (RM829) on the Internet, the newspaper said she had called herself Shilpa Lee on a hookers’ website. She is said to have advertised herself as “a sexy, smart student” who preferred “older gentlemen”.

The story in the newspaper comes just days after her father was jailed for sexually assaulting two 15-year-old girls as he home-tutored them in Maths.

Sufiah passed the Maths A-Level she needed for entry into Oxford at the age of 12.

Three years into Oxford, she sparked a massive police hunt after running away.

At the time her father bizarrely claimed Sufiah had been kidnapped and brainwashed by an organisation seeking the key to her intelligence.

But Sufiah sent an e-mail to her family describing her life under her father as a “living hell”.

She was found in an Internet cafe in Bournemouth where she had been working as a hotel waitress.

She refused to go back to her parents and instead was taken into the care of social services.

By then Farooq was in jail for three years for his part in a £1.5mil (RM9.57mil) mortgage swindle.

Sufiah returned to Oxford to complete the final year of her Masters in Maths but failed to finish the course after meeting trainee lawyer Jonathan Marshall.

They were married in 2004 but her parents and siblings failed to turn up. They divorced a year later.

The report, which carried grainy photographs of a semi-nude woman it claimed was Sufiah, said the girl met the reporter who posed as a client wearing a tiny skirt, leather boots and a tight T-shirt. She was carrying three mobile phones.

She also told the reporter that she was studying for a Masters degree in Economics.

Sufiah gave no indication of any sadness at the jailing of her father the previous day. On Wednesday, Farooq, 50, was sentenced to 18 months at Coventry Crown Court for touching two 15-year-old girls when he was home tutoring them.

The report quoted her friend as saying: “Sufiah has suffered so many knocks in her life. I just hope she can drag herself out of this life she has got herself into.

“She deserves a much better life than this. Her gift has been a curse.”

SHE was a child maths genius who won a place at Oxford University aged just 13—but now the only sums Sufiah Yusof is interested in are the ones she earns as a HOOKER.

For sad Sufiah the daily equation she has to solve is simply sex equals £130 as she sells her body to punters over the internet.

The gifted girl with the winning smile had the world at her feet ten years ago and should be a rich woman by now—but last week she was busy subtracting her underwear for our undercover reporter in her dingy back street flat.

"Would you like to start your half hour now?" said Sufiah, 23, as she danced on the bed, displaying her body for examination.

Then she listed all the sleazy plus points she would throw in for our man if he took up her offer.

Calling herself Shilpa Lee, the former child prodigy still juggles with figures on a hookers' website, describing herself as a "very pretty size 8, 32D bust and 5'5" tall—available for booking every day from 11am to 8pm."

She says she is a "sexy, smart student" who prefers "older gentlemen"— but a former pal who has witnessed her downfall told us: "It is all desperately heartbreaking.

"With her amazing brain she should be able to make money any way she wants. But instead her life has spiralled completely out of control."

Life has never quite added up for Sufiah. Her descent into prostitution in Salford, Manchester, is the latest in a long line of tragedies to have engulfed her since the sunny day when she posed with her university mortar board for the world's press outside prestigious St Hilda's College.

Our shock revelations today come in the week her domineering dad Farooq was jailed for sexually assaulting two 15-year-old girls as he home-tutored them in maths.

And he was always at the root of all her troubles— even as she passed the further maths A-Level she needed for entry to Oxford at the age of 12. In those days Sufia was a strict Muslim child who prayed five times a day and was subjected to her father's famous Accelerated Learning Technique.

Her days involved stretching and breathing exercises in freezing rooms to keep her brain attentive.

Sufiah would then study hard and be forced to play tennis with just as much intensity as fanatical Farooq drove her on. The routine was so effective Sufiah was seeded number eight in the country for under 21s.

But three years into Oxford, the 15-year-old sparked a massive police hunt after running away.

Abuse

At the time her father bizarrely claimed Sufiah had been kidnapped and brainwashed by an organisation seeking the key to her intelligence.

But Sufiah sent an email to her family describing her life under her father as a "living hell".

One message to her sister read: "I've finally had enough of 15 years of physical and emotional abuse. You know what I am talking about."

Sufiah was missing for two weeks before being found in an internet café in Bournemouth where she had been working as a hotel waitress.

She refused to go back to her parents and instead was taken into the care of social services.

It was then revealed that Farooq had been jailed for three years in 1992 for his part in a £1.5m mortgage swindle. Before that—at the age of 19—he had been sent to borstal for his role in a conspiracy involving £100,000.

Free from the spell of her father, Sufiah returned to Oxford to complete the final year of her Masters in Maths.

But she was now more concerned with enjoying herself—and failed to finish the course after meeting trainee lawyer Jonathan Marshall.

They were married in 2004 when Sufiah was just 19 and Jonathan 24. But the strains with her family were still there.

Despite being invited, Sufiah's parents and four brothers and sisters failed to turn up to the wedding.

Her dreams of a happy life with Jonathan were shattered when the couple divorced just a year later.

Now, in her sad little flat, she uses her body to pay the rent. Sufiah met our man, posing as a punter, at the entrance to her building wearing a tiny skirt, leather boots and a tight t-shirt. She was carrying three mobile phones.

She laughed and joked as she led him to her small apartment where a bed was already set out in the lounge.

She told him it was £130 an hour and offered him a glass of water before putting some music on to a cheap portable stereo and nervously stripping down to her red lace bra and knickers.

Sufiah then peeled off her underwear and danced on the bed. She told him she did full sex with a condom and oral sex without protection.

After our man had made his excuses, Sufiah kept him talking by telling him how she was studying for a Masters degree in Economics on a part-time two year course in London.

The former prodigy added: "I've got exams coming up and I'm thinking ‘Oh my God!'"

Once described by her parents as "naïve and unstreetwise", she works alone from her flat without any obvious physical security or protection.

She even admitted to our reporter: "It's always a surprise who you are going to meet."

Cheerful Sufiah gave no indication of any sadness at the jailing of her father the previous day. On Wednesday Farooq, 50, was sentenced to 18 months at Coventry Crown Court for touching two 15-year-old girls when he was home tutoring them at maths.

The court heard how in May last year Farooq arrived at one of the victim's home for a maths lesson.

He started whispering in her ear and kissing her hair and cheek. He also touched her breast and told her she was a genius and pretty before putting her hand on his upper thigh.

Destroyed

Farooq's defence lawyer Tim Hannam said: "He's been back in prison for over five months and knows there'll be no more teaching and any hope he had of gaining an income from the teaching method he had developed to a high degree of success is lost to him. His reputation is destroyed."

Now it's clear the daughter who fled his strict regime has almost been destroyed too.

Her friend said last night: "Sufiah has suffered so many knocks in her life. I just hope she can drag herself out this life she has got herself into.

"She is a good person and deserves a much better life than this. Her gift really has been a curse."

Jabra ditches earpiece design for a dog tag

Labels: , , , ,

Bluetooth headsets are necessary, but no matter how cool they try to make them look, not everyone wants to wear an earpiece for fear of looking like a dork or a cyborg. Jabra is doing something different with its BT3030 Bluetooth device.

Shaped like a dog tag, the BT3030, can be worn around the neck or clipped onto a bag or jacket for easy access.

It connects to two Bluetooth devices, so you can pair it with a phone and a laptop at the same time, and listen to music without worring about missing any calls. The tag has a microphone that picks up your voice, and features several control buttons to answer calls, play, pause, rewind or fast forward the music. I guess what I liked the most about this device is you can use your own headphones with it. The whole setup comes with a removable chain, clip, headphones, and power supply. The cool street stylin' dog tag is available for $79 on Jabra's website.

Adobe launches web-based Photoshop service

Labels: , ,

Adobe has launched a public beta of its web-based Photoshop Express image editor aimed at average consumers who want to quickly touch-up their photos and share them with friends online. Similar to Flickr, the service offers users two gigabytes of online storage, but does set some limits, so photos can't be bigger than 4,000 pixels in height and width or 10 megabytes.Either way, the service is very handy for beginners looking for a simple image-editing application. Some of the basic editing functions in Photoshop Express include red-eye removal, auto correct, crop and rotate. Filters that let you add highlights, soft focus, saturation, and sharpness to your photos are also available. You do have to set up an account to start using the service, but I thought it was worthwhile especially if want to correct some of your older photos. Once logged in you can allow the service to automatically connect to sites like Picasa, Photobucket, and Facebook.

After authorizing the application to work with Facebook, all my images were immediately uploaded to the new service, which I found quite useful. Once the images show up in your new Photoshop Express account, you can edit them and save any changes to your Facebook account.

The image editing application is Flash based, so you do need to have that installed. You'll also need a computer running Windows XP or Vista or Mac OS 10.4. Overall, the application is slow at times, but useful for newbies that don't need a heavy duty image-editing program.

How to set up an intruder alarm on your email account

Labels: ,

This may or may not come as a shocker, but according to a recent FTC survey on identity theft, 16 percent of the victims said their information was stolen by people they knew, which included friends, relatives, neighbors, and coworkers. This is very important because it serves as a reminder that we need to take extra precautions whether we're at home or at work. It's probably a good idea to disable cookies, so you don't save login and password information of your accounts, and you should never keep sensitive information where thieves can easily find it.

I've gotten several emails from readers asking me how they can find out if someone has accessed their personal email account, so I thought I'd point you to an excellent post written by PCWorld's Erik Larkin on how to set a hacker alarm on your web mail box. This is a good way to find out if anyone besides you is logging into your email account.

Here's the gist:

  1. Open an account with OneStatFree.com, and use a disposable e-mail address to complete the registration process.
  2. You'll receive an email from OneStat with an attached file. Save the file, note the account number, and then delete the email.
  3. Rename the file with a name that would catch a hacker's eye like "AccountPasswords." Save the .txt file as an .htm file so it opens up in a web browser.
  4. Send an email with the .htm file to the account you want to monitor. Use a subject title that is eye catching.
  5. Wait for the hacker to take the bait. If the attachment is opened by anyone else but you, the hit counter will record their IP address.

Hackers are very clever, so you want to change your password frequently to something that's a little harder to crack.

Dropped your Mobile Phone or iPod in Water? Rush to the Kitchen

Labels: , , , , , , , ,

here's something i found funny, but possibly true. enjoy

wet blackberry

What is the next step that you would take if your expensive mobile phone or iPod gets wet in the rain or your drop it in a wash basin?

Such accidents are not very uncommon. Adam Curry once dropped his iPhone in the toilet. Venadium went for a swim while the iPod was still in his pocket. Leo Laporte did something similar to his cell phone. Virgo soaked his iPod when a bottle of Diet Coke fell over his trousers.

Since the warranty for most electronics does not cover water damage, what can you do to revive that wet gadget ? The answer is in your kitchen.

Power off the device (if it’s not off already) and try to completely cover the iPod or iPhone in a bowl of rice. Rice being a natural desiccant will help absorb the excess moisture. Let it try for at least 24 hours and DO NOT try to charge the device.

If your gadget has a removable battery, dry it separately to speed up the whole drying process.

This home-remedy is cheap and worth giving a try before you rush to the Apple store for a replacement.

Ernesto Londoño successfully managed to fix his wet BlackBerry phone after he left the device soaked overnight in a bowl of uncooked rice.

why not to try next time your gadget gets wet, might not have many options anyway.

Lesson 1:
A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.
The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs.
When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor.
Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.'
After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.
The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs.
When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?'
'It was Bob the next door neighbor,' she replies.
'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story:
If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2:
A priest offered a Nun a lift..
She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg.
The priest nearly had an accident.
After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg.
The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'
The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'
Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.
On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'

Moral of the story:
If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3:
A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp.
They rub it and a Genie comes out.

'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.'
Puff! She's gone.
'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.'
Puff! He's gone.
'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'

Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.
A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5
A turkey was chatting with a bull.
'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.'
'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'
The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.
Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.
He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:
Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..
Lesson 6
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field.
While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him.
As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.
The dung was actually thawing him out!
He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy..
A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.
Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

Dubai Highway cars accident

A horrific vehicle pile-up on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near Ghantoot - The 25km stretch of the UAE's busiest highway-The crash happened because everyone was speeding despite the severe weather conditions.

Three people have been killed and 277 injured in the United Arab Emirates when dozens of cars and buses collided in thick fog in what could be the country's biggest traffic accident, police said.

Up to 20 cars burned in the pile-up during the morning rush hour on the main motorway between the UAE trade hub of Dubai and the capital Abu Dhabi, police said. So many cars were hit that police had yet to count them all.

The death toll could rise as other casualties were in serious condition, at least one of them critical, police said. Pictures showed charred wrecks, broken glass and metal strewn across the road, which was blocked for most of the day as police and rescue workers evacuated casualties and removed cars. Television footage showed vehicles ablaze in the road.

The crash, which took place on a road where the speed limit is 120km/h, was made worse by the fact that several buses carrying labourers to work were on the road.

Police said 12 buses carrying some 300 workers in total were involved in the crash, which took place at 1pm (AEDT) Wednesday March 12, 2008

Pee Powered Batteries On Sale in Japan

Labels: , , , , ,

as weird as it might sound it's completely true. it went for testing at first and became reality at the moment.

To make the battery, Lee and his colleagues soaked a piece of paper in a solution of copper chloride and sandwiched it between strips of magnesium and copper. This sandwich was then laminated between two sheets of transparent plastic.

When a drop of urine is added to the paper through a slit in the plastic, a chemical reaction takes place that produces electricity.

The prototype battery produced about 1.5 volts, the same as a standard AA battery, and runs for about 90 minutes. Researchers said the power, voltage, and lifetime of the battery can be improved by adjusting the geometry and materials used.

Urine contains many ions (electrically charged atoms), which allows the electricity-producing chemical reaction to take place in the urine battery. Other bodily fluids, such as tears, blood, and semen, would work easily as well to activate the battery.

NoPoPo (Non-Pollution Power) Aqua Batteries are available in both AA and AAA form, although the company page shows they are producing the technology for all sizes of battery, and can only be currently purchased in Japan.

The batteries can be recharged with various different fluids using the new development which forms electric power using liquid as a catalyst.

The basic principle is that a mixture of magnesium and carbon reacts when mixed with a liquid to produce, in the case of the AA battery, up to 500 milliamp-hours (mAh) of life.

Each time the battery is recharged it has a lower power level than the time before and the life cycle allows for about 3 to 5 recharges before disposing of the battery. Each battery can potentially keep its charge for up to 10 years which could be great for many life saving devices in remote locations.

Since the battery does not contain mercury and other harmful materials, it can be easily disposed of without worry for the environment.

So the next time your batteries let you down, just pee on them. (*Will probably help if they are produced by NoPoPo.)

How to download files using torrents?

Labels: , ,

i was with a friend the other day who needed to get a software, i suggested to him that he downloads it from the internet using torrents, as it's available and free. but apparently he didn't know what i was talking about. wasn't the only person. so i thought of why not making a simple introductory tutorial, and i hope it helps.

1. First, you'll need to download and install one of the many torrent client softwares available on the internet such as BitTorrent or Azureus .. etc. for this tutorial im going to refer to Azureus as it's what im currently using

2. after having it successfully installed, run the program and leave it. As most of the time it might be running in the background. (make sure it's not blocked by your windows or any firewall)

3. at this step you're ready to download, usually you can't search for files using the software itself, and you'll need to go to one of many torrents websites such as torrentspy, isohunt, mininova... and search for the file you want.

4. upon finding the file, what you have to look for is 2 things, seeders and leaches. Seeders are the people who had the file completed on their PC, and leaches are those who are still downloading. and of course the bigger the number of people downloading the faster you can download.

5. if you choose a file with a high number of downloaders, find the downloading link and press it. wait for a few seconds (if promoted to open using a software, choose the torrents client you have installed)

now you can enjoy downloading files as large as you want. for advanced users you can create your own torrents files and upload them to the internet.

What's torrents share anyway?
A popular file sharing service developed by Bram Cohen that prevents people from downloading constantly unless they are willing to share in the overall transmission load on the network. Instead of downloading an entire file, BitTorrent breaks a file into chunks and distributes them among several participating users.

What's the difference between other P2P share and torrents?
When you download a "torrent," you are also uploading it to another user. BitTorrent balances the load because broadband download and upload speeds are not the same. Users download files faster than they can upload them, which makes them less interested in sharing bandwidth to upload to someone else. BitTorrent ensures every user participates in uploading. and for downloading you don't have to wait to get it from sources who have completed the entire file, torrents helps you to download from people who haven't complete downloading.

Note: download at your own risk, the publisher is not responsible for any damages caused by downloading or viruses, or any copyrights issues.

The God of Small Things

Traveling is what brings me to read a little, this time it was an interesting pick in fact, the author herself is an architect, worked as a production designer and written two screenplays. It’s amazingly her first book as well. In an astonishing literately novel she tells a story of a twin, Rahel and Estha. Which Feels as watching a motion picture than just reading through, she has an amazing way of taking you into these little kids brains, living and experiencing what they truly go through. It goes backwards from sorting the incidents only then to tell you how they happened and what they’ve gone through. A tragedy their life is, from a crucial environment to their own family at their own home.

gonnato read it again :)
